Karachi Kings have had some of the biggest names of the cricket fraternity during the first three seasons of the Pakistan Super League. In the first season, they had the services of Pakistan’s veteran all-rounder, Shoaib Malik, who captained the side during the half of the edition, while Ravi Bopara led the side in the remaining. The side also featured Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
In the second edition, Kumar Sangakkara was roped in and was given the captaincy band of the team. He had his teammate, Mahela Jayawerdene, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard and Ravi Bopara as some of the immensely skilled and experienced players to help him do well in the tournament. But, in both the seasons, unfortunately, Karachi Kings failed to advance to the playoffs.
Kings’ fans were excited to see the most popular cricketing star of his era, Shahid Afridi, in the Blue and Red uniform in the third episode of the PSL. Moreover, Imad Wasim was trusted for leading the team. The unit did better as compared to the previous two seasons and managed to find a place in the playoffs, though, they lost both the matches in that round.
Karachi Kings’ squad for the Pakistan Super League’s 2019 edition does not have a megastar in the ranks, but the line-up looks quite promising on paper. The talented all-rounder, Imad Wasim will be once again marshalling the troops. As long as batting is concerned, Kings have probably got the best opening pair of the world. They will have the calm and collective, the top-ranked T20I batsman Babar Azam at one end, while they will have the New Zealand’s flamboyant stroke-maker, the second-ranked T20I batsman, Colin Munro, on the other end. The two will compliment each other, Azam will rely on placement and timing, whereas, Munro will go all guns blazing with his power and unorthodox batting style.
Moreover, they have dynamic batsmen like Colin Ingram and Ravi Bopara in the middle-order who can pace their innings as per the situation. They both can hit the long ball and can also play risk-free cricket when needed. Local stars like Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed can also be exceptional on their day.
Then they have some promising all-rounders in the shape of their skipper, Imad Wasim and Zimbabwe’s Sikander Raza. Imad can be handy with the bat. He has proved his mettle time and time again bowling the new ball. He is surely a force to reckon with the bat as well. On the other hand, Raza is arguably one of the most underrated all-rounders of the world. Kings’ took a clever and calculated decision by picking the batting all-rounder, knowing his strength of playing well on the UAE and Pakistani wickets. The Pakistan-origin all-rounder maintains a healthy average of 24.66 with a handsome strike-rate of 127.32 and he can bowl some useful overs for the team as well. Then there is Aamer Yamin, who is an exciting prospect, he can win matches with both with his bowling and batting.
When it comes to bowling, Karachi Kings have great potential. Pakistan’s left-arm pacer, Mohammad Amir will lead the pack during the tournament. The emerging fast bowler, Usman Khan Shinwari will run alongside him to trouble the oppositions’ batting lines. On the other hand, they will have a surprise package in the Aussie pacer, Aaron Summers, who is known for his raw pace and vicious deliveries.
They have a competent spin department, led by the skipper himself, Imad Wasim. Abrar Ahmed, the player Karachi Kings picked in Emerging category is a clever leg-spin bowler. He showed glimpses of his craft during the second season of the league, before sustaining an injury. Then there is Osama Mir and Sikander Raza who can test the oppositions’ batsmen.
Karachi Kings’ fans are anxious to see their team play in the PSL 4, especially at the National Stadium Karachi. The owner of the franchise, Mr Salman Iqbal had earlier said that all his foreign players are ready to visit Pakistan. One can only imagine the atmosphere of the stadium when the Kings will take the field in their home ground. The stands will be packed, there will be only blue colour in the stand and deafening chants in support of Karachi Kings.
