The much awaited PSL draft took place today in Lahore and as the day came to a close the teams have started taking shape and a clear picture of all the teams is now available.
Focussing on the ARY Karachi Kings, the fans were eagerly anticipating a classy logo to be revealed before the all important draft picks. Just moments before the drafting process began the logo was revealed which had a depiction of power plus royalty.
In the first pick of Karachi, former captain Shoaib Malik was selected as their icon player. This was quite a decent pick considering his domestic track record with Sialkot where he has been extremely clever and skilful with his tactics. He is also a regular part of Pakistan’s ODI and T20 side since making his comeback. He will be leading Karachi’s side in the upcoming PSL edition and a lot will depend on him as to how he leads the side and forms a winning combination.
Shakib hails from Bangladesh and is a top ranked all rounder. He has led Bangladesh during difficult times and his all round capabilities are not hidden from anyone. Keeping in mind the conditions in UAE Shakib will come in handy with both bat and ball. His experience with the Bangladesh national side will make him an able deputy of Shoaib Malik.
Sohail Tanvir is a good enough T20 bowler and can strike some lusty blows during the death overs. He has command over slower balls and can bamboozle the batsmen with his variations. But having said that he needs to improve his fielding in order to become a permanent member of the side because fielding plays a key role in the shortest format of the game.
Pakistan’s upcoming all rounder Imad Wasim was the first player from the diamond category that was picked up by Karachi Kings. Imad shot to fame when he hit a match winning six against Sri Lanka in the last T20 series vs the Islanders. He is also handy with the ball and the conditions in UAE will suit him. In order to succeed Imad will have to play a leading role in Karachi’s performance through his batting and bowling abilities.
Ravi Bopara has not been a regular in the national English side off late but he has featured in the English setup for quite a while. He may not strike everyone as the best possible choice but all-rounder’s are crucial to a team’s combination and hopefully Ravi will chip in with his contribution from time to time during the first season.
Thw Windies batsman Lendl Simmons have been a handy batsman in various league around the world including IPL. On his day he is an explosive striker but inconsistencies in his career can become a worry for the Kings. He can also bowl some medium pacers during the middle over’s but its batting will be the focal point for the kings.
In the most anticipated pick of the day the Karachi Kings took everyone by surprise by picking up Mohammad Amir who has just made a comeback into cricket. Amir has been bowling really well during the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League where he picked up all top players through sheer class. Although people are divided over his inclusion but that is a topic for another day. He will bring a lot to the team but the Kings need to be careful with him in the side and keeping him away from the thick of things especially the media.
Bilawal Bhatti has played international cricket for Pakistan but he faded away rather quickly. Although he may be short in height but he can generate some serious pace and trouble the batsman. One thing that he needs to improve on is his death bowling because it has been seen on various occasions that he can go for runs so it needs fine tuning before the all important tournament begins.
The Englishman James Vince was the final pick of the day for the Kings and it was quite an impressive one in the shape of this talented English player. He had impressed one and all with his batting in the recently concluded series versus Pakistan. He can be a big hitter and times the ball really well. It was good to see the Kings mixing up the young blood with the experienced lot.
Come the second and final day of the draft the kings would be looking to bring in a proper batsman along with a keeper to strike a well formed balance.
